Public Safety

Retiree Police Program
Public safety is a necessity for any viable neighborhood, community, town, city or county or state. However, defining public safety is a little more challenging.

At a minimum we need police, fire, emergency medical services (EMS) and a correctional division.I want to develop a program where our retired police officers that still qualify to carry a weapon become part of an extended force of police officers.

Retired police officers would volunteer to help lighten the load of our career officers. The program would also provide an easier transition for retirees to maintain a role in our community.

Maryland State Police and Helicopters
The role of the Maryland State Police (MSP) should first be law enforcement then emergency medical services. The helicopters are needed to transport our critically ill and injured patients to shock trauma centers.
I plan to have the MSP medical director assist the rural sections of the state with Advanced Life Support (ALS) from the troopers who have ALS certification.

Fire and Emergency Medical Services
In regards to our Fire and EMS partners, I want to have the Maryland Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) coordinate with all counties to have a uniform approach to responses. We have a considerable amount of resources in each jurisdiction that gets a limited number of requests for service.

I want to regionalize these specific units and have a regional response. Voters expect when they call 911 that fast, reliable and competent services are provided throughout the state.

After we secure the basic needs for our citizens we can incorporate the health and environmental needs to ensure the public safety of our state.
