Public Assistance
Nobel-prize winning economist Milton Friedman is famous for saying, "There is no such thing as a free lunch." That is unless you are the recipient of public assistance.
I want the free lunch to stop. I am not against helping a community neighbor down on their luck, but I do not expect my neighbor to live off of public assistance for a lifetime.
A 15 year-old young lady summed it up when she tried to have the Maryland Legislature pass a bill requiring those on public assistance to take a class on economics. I want to take her action one step further and insist public assistance to be a bridge to an end.
While a neighbor is utilizing public assistance, they should move toward an opportunity to become independent of government support.
We should lend a hand, be supportive but lessen the dependence on the “Free Lunch”. Our community has a tremendous amount of work available and needed. In order to receive public assistance, the recipient should be enrolled in school or vocational training, or hold some form of employment.
